I use photography as a tool for documentation and somewhat obsessively record my surroundings. I like to capture moments of humour or abnormality and having a camera always in hand (or pocket) facilitates this.
I think what demands/deserves attention in a photograph is the thing photographed. Since this is largely out of the photographer’s control their role shouldn’t be overstated. I hope to remain objective and level headed to avoid the inflated sense of self so common in the male-dominated photographic practise. I also aim to remain aware of the cultural/experiential bubbles I exist in. My photographs are not universal insights into life but rather images of a very specific and privileged existence.
Most recently I have been creating collages recreating thumbnails of videos on pornhub.com in order to draw attention to the violent and misogynistic traits of mainstream pornography. I also question what effect this may have on the real life sexual practises of people behind closed doors. This especially pertinent for my generation, being the first to have grown up with limitless access to hardcore pornographic content.
